Malama `AinaCare for the Land Outdoor Service Project - Friday June 9 - 9am-Noon --- Cost: Priceless! The class of '96 is going to do a service project that gets us out into Hawaii's natural beauty as well as benefits the community and the environment. Updated Wed 6/7/06: Because of the responses we got back, we were able arrange to do two service projects. One at Sandy's Beach and the other in Makiki Valley near the Hawaii Nature Center. The details and directions on each of the projects are below: Sandy's Beach - Beach Cleanup We will be cleaning up the area on the East end of Sandy's beach park. Remember that Sandy's is a little farther from town so plan to get on the road a little earlier (about 30 minutes from town). You'll likely be out in the sun for a while so make sure you protect your skin appropriately (sun block, hat, sunglasses etc). We'll be providing bottled water but if you have your own prefered drink please bring it. We don't want you getting dehydrated. Although the project is near the beach, the cleanup includes some areas that are rocky and uneven in spots. You may want to bring shoes or sturdy sandals. Trash bags and gloves will be provided. Directions: The cleanup area is on the East side of the entrance road and south (makai) of the highway. Look for garbage in the Naupaka bushes and such in this area East of the road and all the way down towards the traffic signal. Put your bags along the beach-side of the unevenly paved area where you parked or on the edge of the highway if you are closer to the traffic signal. More information on Sandy's Beach Makiki Valley - Trail Building Although we originally had been told they needed help with the Manoa Valley trail, the Hawaii Trails program needs our help in building the trail in Makiki more so that's where we will be going. As with all hiking in the rainforests if Hawaii, wear covered shoes and bring lots of insect repellent. The mosquitoes are ever present. Although it is likely we won't be getting as much sun as the beach cleanup, I still recommend bringing a hat and probably wearing some sunscreen on exposed areas of skin. Although I'm usure if we'll need them, if you have garden/work gloves you may want to bring them along. Water will be provided. Directions: learn more about the Hawaii Nature Center here Questions?
